The Municipality of Nessebar presented the project for reducing waste at sea

A press conference was held today at Artium Center to present the project „Reduction of waste in the water area of Nessebar through cleaning actions and campaigns to raise awareness of the local population: protection of marine natural and cultural heritage as a public responsibility and resource for local traditional livelihoods“, funded by the Program” Environmental Protection and Climate Change “of the EEA FM 2014 – 2021.

The present representatives of the stakeholders and the general public were acquainted with the main objectives of the project and the planned activities. The results of the initial work were reported – a detailed study using a complex of marine geophysical methods and ortho-photo photography with a drone in the waters around the Nessebar Peninsula, which found more than 1160 tires at the bottom, 147 pcs. concrete / dead anchor and over 120 other objects – iron, buckets, etc. All identified objects are plotted on a map with their exact coordinates. They will be eliminated through the project’s upcoming seabed cleaning campaigns. After the completion of the first stage of the cleaning, a second remote examination will be conducted, which will evaluate the achieved results. If necessary, a second cleaning campaign will be carried out if more waste items are found that are still lying on the seabed.
